Biography
Research Approach:
Jonathan is an applied clinical health researcher. His research focuses on understanding the lived experience of people who have chronic lung disease and how this impacts their abilities to gain benefits from health care services and treatments. His research approach is the use of mixed methods, integrating insights from quantitative and qualitative data to enrich our understanding of patients’ lives and how health care services can meet their needs. He is an actively involved in COVID and COPD related clinical trials. He has an active research interest in exercise physiology and resuscitation decision making.

Biography
Frances is a qualitative applied health researcher with a background in health psychology. She has expertise in a range of methods including thematic analysis, Framework analysis, grounded theory and mixed methods research and extensive experience in research design, data collection and analysis through interviews, focus groups and questionnaires with patients, families and clinicians. She has conducted research across secondary, primary and community care settings with a particular focus on patient experience, support and treatment access needs of people living with COPD.
She is currently involved in three NIHR funded studies. The UPTURN study aims to develop and evaluate in an RCT a behavioural intervention to improve uptake to pulmonary rehabilitation by people living with COPD; Frances will co-lead an impact evaluation of the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion workstream in the study. The OPACE study is an RCT to optimize azithromycin prevention treatment in COPD; Frances leads on the qualitative elements of the pilot acceptability study. The BEARS study is conducting an RCT to evaluate a set of virtual reality video games to maximize the hearing abilities of children using bilateral cochlear implants; Frances leads on the qualitative aspects of the process evaluation within a mixed methods framework.
