Biography

I undertook undergraduate and clinical training at Cambridge University (Gonville and Caius College). I then completed a PhD at the University of Cambridge into mechanisms of arrhythmia in inherited cardiac conditions, funded by a Medical Research Council Training Fellowship, and for this was awarded the British Cardiovascular Society Young Research Workers’ Prize.

After specialist training at Royal Papworth Hospital, I undertook research fellowships in electrophysiology investigating mechanisms and treatment strategies for complex arrhythmias at two world-leading cardiac centres: Barts Heart Centre and the Hopital du Haut-Leveque, Bordeaux, through funding from a European Society of Cardiology Training Grant.

I have been a Consultant Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist at Royal Papworth Hospital since 2018.  I am the Research Lead for Cardiac Rhythm Management and Assistant Director for Research and Development at Royal Papworth Hospital, and hold the position of Affiliated Assistant Professor at the University of Cambridge.

Research Approach:

I conduct and manage clinical research in Cardiac Electrophysiology. My research interests are in furthering our understanding of the mechanisms of complex arrhythmias, especially ventricular tachycardia and atrial fibrillation, and using this to develop novel ablation and implantable cardiac device treatments for arrhythmias to improve clinical outcomes. I also have specific interests in the treatment of arrhythmias in congenital heart disease and in patients with pulmonary hypertension.

My research has been supported by the Medical Research Council, the Wellcome Trust, the European Society of Cardiology and the British Heart Foundation, as well as industry partners including Boston Scientific, Biosense Webster, Medtronic, Abbot and Acutus Medical.

Current projects:

  1. Use of Pulsed Field Ablation in the treatment of ventricular arrhythmias: PI, Royal Papworth Hospital and University of Cambridge
  2. Identifying new therapeutic targets in human ventricular arrhythmia: PI, Royal Papworth Hospital and University of Cambridge
  3. Arrhythmias in Pulmonary Hypertension: PI, Royal Papworth Hospital and University of Cambridge
  4. Prospective evaluation of open irrigated ablation catheters with high resolution mapping to treat paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (INTERRUPT-AF): UK CI
  5. Real world Data collection in subjects treated with the FARAPULSE Pulsed Field Ablation system (FARADISE): UK PI
  6. Clinical Evaluation of the StablePoint Catheter and Force-Sensing System for Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation (NEWTON-AF): UK PI
  7. A prospective randomised comparative trial of subcutaneous implantable cardioverter defibrillator implantation with and without defibrillation testing (PRAETORIAN-DFT): UK SI
