Biography
Patrick Calvert is the Clinical Director of Research and Development at Royal Papworth Hospital (RPH) and a consultant cardiologist in coronary and structural intervention.
He graduated from the Universities of Cambridge and Oxford and trained in the Eastern Deanery for general and interventional cardiology. He undertook a PhD at Cambridge University investigating vulnerable coronary plaques. He was awarded the British Cardiovascular Intervention Society Young Investigators Award and the Journal of the American College of Cardiology Young Author Achievement Award (JACC Imaging).
He is the Cardiovascular National Specialty Leads for the NIHR CRN. He is chair of the British Cardiovascular Intervention Society Structural Heart Disease Research Group responsible for developing collaborative structural heart disease research. He has a broad range of research interests but current focuses on clinical outcomes.
As Cardiovascular Lead for the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Integrated Care System he drafted a 5y plan to improve the cardiovascular health of the region and weave clinical research into the clinical cardiovascular services.
As Clinical Director for R&D, he devised a 5y strategy to realise the research potential of RPHs move to the Biomedical Campus. This includes substantial investment in RPH R&D infrastructure and the appointment of five 50/50 Research Leader posts.
Research Approach:
Patrick Calvert works collaboratively with other groups in the UK and abroad to undertake a range of studies from randomised controlled trials to observational registries to provide clinical insight into cardiovascular disease, especially novel structural heart disease.
Current projects:
- PRIMARY trial – Randomised controlled trial comparing transcatheter edge-to-edge repair of mitral valve to surgery (NIH grant)
- MRI substudy of PRIMARY Trial (BHF Project Grant)
- PARADIGM trial – Percutaneous device closure of paravalvular leak
- European Registry of Paravalvular leak closure
- British Cardiovascular Intervention Society National Registry of transcatheter implantation of mitral valves
- REVALVE. Global registry of TAVI-in-TAVI
- A prospective registry of patients with post infarction ventricular septal defect: a scoping study to evaluate the burden of disease and current treatment patterns in the UK
- A pilot study to understand whether percutaneous closure improves symptom status and quality of life in patients with paravalvular leak
